Line Haul

What is a Line Haul?

In logistics, the term line haul refers to the transport of goods by any means of transport by land, air or water between two specified stations. These stations can be cities, ports or even warehouses. Furthermore, line haul services require defined departure and arrival times. The better calculable of the transport offer for the demanders increases the attractiveness of scheduled transport operations. While the routes are fixed, the goods transported can vary in volume and weight, from small documents to heavy pallets.

Courier companies collect freight from a designated depot. At this depot, freight with common destinations is grouped in trailers for (long-distance) transport to a sorting facility (hub) or one or more other types of depot (e.g. distribution facilities). In a sorting plant, goods of different origins are sorted and reassembled for further transport to their destination.
